By no means is this a plea to “one-up” anyone who might be attempting to read the entire Bible in the first 90 days of 2012, but I had an idea a couple of weeks ago and simply thought: What if?
What if we tried to live the Bible in 90 days? Sure, we’re SUPPOSE to already be doing that, but if I’m honest… when I read the scriptures, I don’t always find that my life is congruent with what I read. I live with this constant aspiration to be like Jesus, but find myself falling extremely short everyday. And maybe that’s just me. Maybe you pick up the Bible and think, “Yup, I took care of the widow and orphan today. And yup, I sold some old stuff on eBay and gave the proceeds to a neighbor. Oh, and yup, I pulled over for the guy who had a flat tire. I actually paused my busy day for 5 minutes and carried a conversation with a homeless guy. The money I gave him was just a bonus. Yeap, l wake up hoping to run into a blind person so I can practice what’s IN me.” Like I said, maybe you already think that way, but I have to wonder what would happen if we took 90 days and put some intentionality to our spiritual lives.
Inside the first 90 days or inside the other 275… I have to wonder what would happen if every time we read our Bibles, we called a friend, or looked at our spouse, and said, “So, how we gonna live this out today?“
Thanks for reading my thoughts in 2011, friends. Happy New Year.
Just kidding. I have to be kidding, right? We’ve already come to the conclusion that we’ll never stop sinning, so why bother? For it’d be considered outrageous to think that we’ll never tell another white lie in our lifetime, or disobey God in any form or fashion. So on our scale of minor sins to major sins, we resolve to stay on the minor end to keep our spiritual conscience fairly clear. You can admit minor sins because “everybody struggles with that”. We’re ok people being insecure because we believe that’s simple management of emotions that can be handled. If I told you I had a deep dark sin and that it was… drum roll please… gluttony, nobody would care. What’s even crazier is that we think God doesn’t really care all that much about that one. Almost as if “He’s heard worse.”
Sin is not something we manage. It’s something we stop doing. Sin dulls your perspective of who Jesus really is, and results in a dulled view of your identity in him. If you think your sin is something that is just in the corner of your spiritual world, it’s going to be the death of you. The thought that it hasn’t gotten out of control means it’s got control of you and not the other way around. We don’t see the ramifications of most of our sins, so in our mind, we merely give ourselves a slap on the wrist and thank God for the cross, but our effort to actually stop is up to OUR will. Sin brings your will power to a zero. That’s the point of sin. To keep you running in place. The “oops, I did it again” mentality will, first, paralyze you spiritually, and then second, destroy your spirit altogether. We cannot wait for rock bottom to believe it’s for real.
2 ways I think you can break the cycle of sin:
1.) Tell a few people that you’re in the cycle. The more people that know, the more humiliating it is for you. You need that breaking point of humility if you want to stop. Don’t worry about if you can “trust” them.
2.) Declare who you are in Christ moments after you sin. The point of sin is to put a gap between you and your God. By letting yourself know that you’re not gonna let that happen because of your sin, you remind yourself what Jesus did!
So why bother? Because he died for you. And I hope that’s enough.
It’s a no-brainer. The missing piece for the Lakers locker room is none other than @ryanleak.
Here’s 4 reasons why.
1.) I’m awesome at basketball.
2.) Dwight Howard and I are buddies. If you sign me, I’ll call him for you.
3.) I’ll play for $950,000. That’s how much you make in concessions during half-time.
4.) Kobe needs somebody as competitive as he is on the floor. Ask anyone who’s played Mafia with me. I promise you, I will compete night in and night out.
With Danny Hoyt as my agent, I just request some descent seats for him as well. If the NBA continues to be absurd in their Executive Offices, I highly doubt they’ll put a block to signing me. I can be in LA as soon as Sunday. I gotta say bye to my friends at church.
Going into the new year, we all know that gyms everywhere will be jam-packed. People will eat healthier. People will be trying to read the entire Bible in 90 days. (My dad does it in 40. Unbelievable.) And after all is said and done, we usually dissolve back to the normal us.
How do we overcome slipping back into our old ways? I don’t know. But what I’m doing for 2012 is creating a bucket list. A bucket list just for 2012. These aren’t goals. This is stuff I just want to do before 2013.
1.) Go to the Lakers vs Heat game in LA. (Airfare on me if you got the seats)
2.) Go Skydiving
3.) Learn how to dive in a pool. (Stop laughing. I can swim. I just can’t dive.)
4.) Run a half-marathon with Dustin Wells.
5.) Go on a missions trip outside of the US. (never been off the continent, but possibly going to Uganda with my church)
It’s like we all have this better version of us inside our heads that is rich, fearless, and seriously good-looking, but I say why can’t we begin being the person that we dream we were?! Make a 2012 bucket list. Scare yourself. Face fears. Blow some money on something unforgettable. Achieve something. I don’t want to survive another year. I want to make the most of my time and life while I have it. Whatever you do, don’t play it safe. “A person who has a Savior never plays it safe.” -Judah Smith.
If the need of money, and many other obstacles weren’t in the way, what would you do in a year? Carpe diem.
