When it comes to Christianity, there’s so many things we choose to celebrate. It could be a new live worship album, or a new building, or a capital campaign, or a new sermon series. I think these things are high on our list. When these things come up, we get extra creative. But in my opinion, I think they are all too often overrated. And believe me, I’m the first person to come up with a new sermon series idea. We shouldn’t put less energy into the substance of what we create to enhance the church experience for the lost, and for the found. But I did come across a video that one of my friends, Scott Zibell, put together for his church in Rockford, IL. named Heartland Community Church.
When I saw this video I realized, the most under-rated entity of the Christian experience, in my opinion, is baptism. It’s like baptism is this thing you do right away when you become a Christian and is often forgotten. When Jesus was baptized, a dove came from heaven! It was as if God wanted to show off an amazing moment between Him and His Son. Most baptisms I see in today’s church is simply a big tub that people get dunked into. And there’s nothing wrong with how the church is doing baptisms in America today. But I would challenge our creativity on how we celebrate a HUGE moment in a Christian’s life who’ve decided to take their relationship with God to a whole new level.

Even if you landed your dream job, all of us at some point in our lives will have to go through some sort of interview. It can be tough for the interviewer and the interviewee. The interviewer spends most of the conversation hoping there’s something about you that is going to make them want to hire you. The interviewee spends most of the conversation wondering “how they’re doing.” As the person who gets to spend most of his time as the interviewer now, I’m always looking for ways to get better at interviewing. Recently, I was invited to sit in on the hiring process for a full day at a prominent church here in the South. It was a phenomenal experience. There were a dozen or more interviewers and several interviewees a part of the process. Throughout the day there were many many questions asked back and forth through different levels of interviews. Towards the end of the day, the Senior Pastor interrupted only one of the interviews. This was completely unexpected. He puts his hand on the shoulder of the interviewee and asks what I believe is the most important question you can ask anyone as an interviewer: “WHY YOU?”
Why You? Isn’t this the point of the interview? Isn’t the answer to this question what the interviewer and interviewee really want to know. The problem is answering this question can be difficult when you don’t know what value you have brought and can bring to any organization. It’s one thing to tell the head of the HR Department why you would be a good hire. But imagine the CEO of a large company, unexpectedly, interrupting your interview and asking you that question. The great part of this is if you know your value, the question will be easy. I once offered to do some work for free for someone I considered to be a “Big Wig”. I thought, “Well, if I hook him up, he could be a great reference for me.” His response to me was, “If you don’t value yourself, no one else will. Charge me. Something.”
If you’re the interviewee, aim for one goal: Walk away knowing exactly why they should or shouldn’t hire you. If you’re the interviewer… cut them some slack.
P.s. The one interview the Senior Pastor interrupted included the candidate the church hired.
I’m sitting across the table from this guy who is explaining the game of golf to me. Words like eagle and birdie used to be mere species flying all over the earth. But on this day, they meant something completely different to someone else. As he began to tell me how mentally prepared one must be to be a good golfer, I thought to myself how hard could it REALLY be? It was as if he heard my thought. His next sentence was, “it could make a grown man cry.” I saw an atheist arguing with a Christian once. The Christian began to weep. I thought, “oh no, he lost.” He began to tell the atheist about how although his argument was very well put together, he simply was not there when the now Christian had a gun to his own head, he wasn’t there to see Jesus rescue him from a life engulfed in things that only kill him. A man with an experience is never at the mercy of a man with an argument.
And a man at the point of losing his life who is rescued, I just think maybe it could… make a grown man cry. I was riding shotgun with this guy who just bought a house for him and his family. Doing what most husbands do, He went outside to simply mow the lawn. He couldn’t get the blade to cut. But that wasn’t it, bills were at an all time high, and there at his very own broken lawn mower the pressure hit him and he, a grown man, began to weep. There is some pride deep down inside a man that wants to do his best to take care of his land, his family, and I think that at some point in some grown men’s lives, if they fall short of doing just that, maybe… it could make a grown man cry. There’s this friend of mine who just graduated college. He didn’t know what he was going to do when he graduated, and he still doesn’t know.
There is this pressure that comes upon all of us as we “grow up.” We get to this milestones that tell us that we have to at least be doing something. Not everybody knows their PURPOSE. Not everybody has all their ducks lined in a row. And my friend… well… his mom told me he would stay up late at night asking himself “what am I going to do with my life?”… and she said… he would cry.
I heard about this lady once, and she was looking for who she thought was most important person in the world. She thought he was on the only person in the world who could fix her problems. She heard he was in town and so she came running to him and said, “if only you were here, you could have saved my brother.” The man comes to her house and sees that it was true, it was too late, her brother had truly died. And the Bible says that this half grown man half grown God, Jesus… wept. Perhaps it was the look on Mary’s face that made this man cry. Whatever the reason is, Jesus told them to remove the stone and told Lazarus to come on out and take off his “grave clothes.” In other words, he told Lazarus to take off what did pronounce him dead. I had a situation today that made me honestly want to cry. And a song came to heart that had words of “nothing… is… impossible… for… You….” and then I read this scripture and I dunno… I just believe it. You may or may not have a situation that can make you cry, but it ain’t over. It ain’t over. Nothing… is… impossible… for… Jesus. And When your situation turns around… stop wearing your grave clothes….
